I am officially a proud cat lady. My two favorite felines turned one this month. I wanted to do something extra (and extra special) to celebrate my kitties turning into cats as well as surviving one year as a responsible pet owner.
Owning animals is SO rewarding. My cats greet me at the door, talk to me (yes, I’m serious), and of course get into laughable shenanigans. However, they didn’t make it to their birthday without some sweat from mom.
When we first got our cats, they had tummy troubles. Both happy as clams, it seemed that their upset stomaches didn’t affect their playful mood. Regardless, we ended up taking them to the vet. Hundreds of dollars later, it seemed that our favorite new family members just needed a different type of food.
It seems super simple, but how would we know? Sadly, like kids, animals don’t come with an instruction manual. Being a responsible pet parent can be expensive, when the answer is pretty simple. So, to help other new cat owners I wanted to share some insight on how to care for your new family member from two now relieved, once worried cat parents.
I partnered with Solid Gold for this post because this brand rescued me from worrying about my cats health. My cats, Lewis and Clark, are so happy, healthy ( getting into more mischief than ever) because their bodies have the best fuel. While this is a sponsored post, it is packed with amazing information that you need as a new pet owner and a brand I stand solidly behind.
3 tips for new cat owners with Solid Gold
Read the Label
We tried lots of cat food, but our favorite was by far Solid Gold. The brand focuses on your pets’ system as a whole, which is essential when your pet is young. They also offer a variety of natural and holistic foods, which I use for my cats every day. Like people, pets need strong gut health to help them absorb nutrients throughout their life! – this is why skimping on food without valuable nutrients can be a big no-no.
What drew us to Solid Gold in particular is that it is full of whole super foods and powerful proteins. It has rich ingredients and contains no meat by-product meal, corn, wheat, soy, sugar, artificial preservatives or flavors. These are just some of the ingredients that can make your friend’s stomach upset.
Wet vs Dry food
Not going to lie, we weren’t always keen on wet food. However, we were told time and time again that cats NEED wet food in their diet. Male cats are very prone to UTIs and other GU disorders. Not drinking enough water can really put your kitty in trouble. Introducing wet food into their diet is really easy and to be honest, they just love it.
We love giving our kitties the Purrfect Pairings that the brand offers in their line of holistic pet food. They come in so many flavors, like chicken, salmon and tuna. They also contain goat milk for an added boost. This is important to me as a cat owner because, unlike the folk lore, you should never give your kitty cow milk. Cow milk wreaks havoc on your cats digestive track.
The vet also suggested that you alternate with dry food. The crunch of the food keeps your cats teeth free from tartar. While their rough tongues help clean the inside of their teeth, dry food can help clear away build up that is stuck on the outside.
A little something extra
It is also easier to mix in supplements like the Solid Gold SealMeal. I really love giving them the added boost by mixing this supplement, which is a great addition to your dog or cat’s meal, into their food twice a day. The supplement is full of omega fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, natural digestive enzymes to help them utilize more nutrients and support for their overall wellness. Put frankly, I love my cats and I want to make sure they live long, healthy lives.
Not all cats can free feed
We realized that not only was the type of food important, but how much! It turns out one of our biggest problems was not knowing how much food to give our little fellas. We just left out cat food and refilled when it was getting low. Our cats engorged themselves with food. I mean their tums were balloons. This worried us, but people told us this would get better. Hint: it did not. I’m not 100% sure if this is because we adopted two cats at the same time. However, not all cats can free feed and that is okay. Our cats get a prompt breakfast and dinner. they don’t seem to mind and they can move around a lot better without a giant belly.
Luckily, Solid Gold has amazing instructions for how much to feed your pet right on the back of the packaging. It goes by weight as well, not age, which we found very helpful since our cats are petite.
have another other kitty questions? I’m happy to answer them!
