Quilted Patchwork Dress Tutorial

If you know me, you know that I love a good craft project. Something that is easy, simple, but fabulous and attention grabbing. Sometimes finding those types of projects can be difficult – so when I created this patchwork quilt dress tutorial I KNEW it was a wardrobe winner.

The dress was a white denim jean find from a J.crew factory sale. That said, the simple shift dress shape would be so simple to sew. However, for the cost of $15, the cost of making it yourself would probably be comparable. The big win! of this project is creating the iron on (yes!) patches for this dress.

If you like this tutorial, try out this one about how to make a quilt star jean.

Using my favorite product ever – heat and bond. You can make any type of applique. It makes any fabric iron on, allowing you to easily bond your custom designs with any fabric type.

Materials for Patchwork Dress Tutorial

Cotton shift dress

1/8 yard of 5 different shades/patterns of fabric

Heat N Bond Ultra Hold

Instructions

Create the pattern or stencil for each quilt “petal”. I printed this shape on heavy weight card stock and cut it out.

Iron each type of fabric, so that the surface is crisp and flat. Next, place the heat N bond shiny side down onto the fabric. Iron per package instructions until it is bonded with the fabric. Remember to adhere the heat n bond to the wrong side of the fabric (if there is one)

Trace your stencil ~8 times on to the paper surface of the fabric. Cut out.

Arrange your petals into a quilted star pattern. When you like the design, remove the paper backing and iron on to the dress.

Sometimes the heat n bond has trouble holding on to the fabric after ironing or washing. To avoid this, preheat the fabric before applying the design/patch. If this still does not work, sewing or glueing the edges works fine.
