Nautical Anchor Pennant Shirt

It’s no secret I love the vintage look of a good pennant. If I had it my way I’d be living in a “grandfather’s den” – what my best friend so endearingly called my home decor style. While she wasn’t 100% on the money, my love for thrifted treasures manifests itself through items that scream sentiment – which is why I’ll admit I have my Papa’s Rutgers pennant hanging over my bar cart at home. I wanted to create a shirt with style and character – a graphic tee with a hometown twist.
In creating this nautical pennant shirt I used my cricut (uh mazing), but if you don’t have one fear not. This tutorial is easy and will have you representing the home team in no time!

Materials
Felt
Rick rack
Cricut and HTV vinyl (optional but oh, so nice)
Sewing machine (optional see instructions step )

instructions
First things first, let’s decide how big you want your pennant to be! I made mine 4 inches long and 3 inches wide. This creates a “fat” triangle, to create the cute pennant shape. In order to create a symmetrical triangle (or isosceles triangle for you math nerds like me), mark 1.5 inches (or halfway up the flat side of your triangle. mine is 3 inches tall, so i measured 1.5 inches). Next, measure 4 inches out from your 1.5 inch mark. Then, using a ruler, connect the top and bottom of your “tall” 3 inch side to create the pointed triangle of the pennant. Cutting with a rotary cutter (pizza cutter for fabric) helps to create a clean cut.
Once your pennant is cut out, it’s time to create your design. if you don’t have a cricut – don’t worry you can do this all by hand. the cricut just makes life much easier.
To create by hand: use a patch, applique, or hand painted design to the middle of your pennant. using heat and bond works super well if you are creating your own patch.
To create with a cricut: sign into design space and search “anchor”. The exact shape i used should pop right up! make sure your anchor is 2.5″ tall (so it will fit on your pennant) and program your cricut to cut on HTV vinyl.

Iron your patch on to the pennant!
Next, cut a 3 inch x .5 inch piece of felt from the contrasting color ( i used red). Sew or glue to the end of the pennant. (if using sewing machine sew to end)
Finally, pin and sew to secure to your shirt. If not using a sewing machine fabric glue works well.
