Make a magnetic garden from thrifted shot glasses

shot glass crafts

We are starting off this years Thriftmas with a mini garden that clings to your fridge. Using thrifted shot glasses and just a few more materials, you can gift this magnetic garden to a planter enthusiast on your list. Practical and cute, this project is not only completed in a few hours but costs less than $10 to create.

I gathered these double shot glasses from my local thrift store. I love that they have that nostalgic feel of a college night out. It’s important when choosing your glasses for these projects that they after light and linear – meaning they don’t curve outward or inward. The fancy shot glasses won’t work best on this project, as you need a flat surface to sit flush with the magnet. This will create a stronger contact with the fridge, maintaining a safe hold.

If you have children, pets, or are just a little clumsy – reach for thrifted plastic or metal shot glasses for this project. This will ensure that any accidents that create broken glass doesn’t create more of a hazard!

Materials

Double shot glasses

Strong glue, like E9000

Magnets

Gravel (like fishbowl) and dirt as needed

Instructions

You can view the full video for this tutorial on my IgTV here

step one: Clean and dry the glasses thoroughly to loosen and remove dust.

step two: add a generous amount of E9000 to the back of the magnet. Apply to the glass and allow to dry.

*make sure that the glasses are not right next to each other and are supported (as in video). Otherwise, the magnets will pull together and ruin your project*

step three: If creating a planter, add gravel to the bottom of the planter (since you cannot create a hole to drain the water). Add clean dirt and plant the succulents as desired.
