Freeport, Maine Travel Guide

Freeport, Maine is a magical wonderland to lovers of L.L. Bean style. This is the perfect spot for a cozy weekend. Only 20 minutes north of Portland, Freeport is well known as the home to L.L. Bean headquarters, with a store that is open 24 hours. Yes, you read that correctly. It has its own coffee shop, a pond with native fish, and of course a flannel in every style and color you could ever dream.

For those looking for a weekend of shopping, Freeport will not disappoint. Many other popular outlet stores orbit the main headquarters as well as highly rated restaurants. If you don’t mind a very short drive, many great brewers will welcome you on a tour. There are also parks to leaf peep and hike, if you want a quieter retreat.

Where to stay

The Harraseeket Inn

Where should you stay to experience this rustic shopping mecca? The Harraseeket Inn is within walking distance to L.L. Bean Headquarters. The inn is family run, it’s history spanning many generations of the Gray family. The 84 room hotel has a rustic, country ambience. The floors adorned with rich colored rugs, trailing up the stairs to your room. Our room faced the cozy garden courtyard which I’m sure sings with newlywed love in the summer during wedding season. Many rooms have a private fireplace, a luxury we happily enjoyed. You aren’t  a boy scout? No problem, the lovely innkeepers pre make the fire, right down to the crumpled newspaper. All you have to do is crawl into bed and light the match. We let the autumn air tumble into our room with a the fire lit. It was a lovely evening.

The inn is also home to two restaurants, one being a tavern. It was a great treat for a late night bite. In the morning, we explored the continental breakfast.  Complimentary, but with fine dining feel. We recommend the quiche and the bacon.

Though we didn’t experience it ourselves, Chip, the inn owner, assured us that tea time is THE time. In the main common room, which is home to a grand piano and roaring fire, every afternoon the current residents of the inn descend to mingle among tea. We will definitely be back just for this!
