How to Make a Basket Bag for Summer

basket bag diy

If you haven’t noticed, I am very much into the basket bag trend. I love that texture is the new neutral. When searching for the perfect basket tote online, I realized it was a great opportunity to recycle what I already had in the house! This simple sew (or no sew!) basket bag diy tutorial will have you running to your attic or local thrift!

Let’s talk about how cute this bag turned out. To boot, I used scrap fabric and a bag I snagged for about $5. That is a summer steal!

This basket bag diy also makes for the perfect beach bag. Sand runs right out of the slats and you don’t have to worry about tracking scratching it!

Of course, if you aren’t a seamstress this bag has a no-sew option. Swap over the sewn straps for ribbon, a belt, or even a silk scarf.

I made this tassel hat too! A dollar store steal!

Instructions

Step one: remove any embellishments carefully from the basket.

Step two: cut two pieces of fabric. I used stretch denim for this project. Cut each piece to 4 inch wide by about 22 inches long. The length, or 21 inch will be your strap length, so shorten or length as per your preference.

step three: with right sides together, sew along the length of each strip. Flip right side out and press.

step four: Next, Very carefully pull the edge of the fabric through the slats in the basket. If you have a tightly woven basket, you should use a thinner fabric to make this step a little easier!

step five: finally, make a knot on each side of the strip to secure the strap.
